I'm David and my wife's name is Jenny. We are the owners and sole employees of J&D Custom. We love to create small machined parts and many other things. Use the links to the left to check out our site for some examples.
I chose the name "Spiffy Widgets" in December of 2012 when we first started talking about expanding our hobbies into a business. (Cocktails may have been involved in the naming process)
Jenny was on-board with the name "Spiffy Widgets" in theory but was not as thrilled with it once I registered it with the Missouri Secretary of State as Spiffy Widgets LLC. Shortly thereafter, "J&D Custom" was registered as our DBA (Doing Business As).
Our official name, J&D Custom, has an ampersand in it but when creating the website "www.janddcustom.com" I used "and" instead of an ampersand because I couldn't register a domain name with an ampersand. So far as I know, I still can't. (This most I have used the word "ampersand" in a while but probably not ever.)
Our business cards have Spiffy Widgets on one side and J&D Custom on the other. For the record; I still prefer Spiffy Widgets because it's catchy and accurately describes the projects I most like to design and create.
Jenny and I both have full-time day jobs. She runs a fabrication lab for a local college and I am a parts inspector for a US based, multinational manufacturer of safety products. This limits the time we can spend on our own business but gives us the flexibility to take on projects that appeal to us rather than taking jobs we are not passionate about in order to pay the bills.
We are saving up to build a nice purpose-built shop in a few years. (The banks are not stoked about lending money to build a shop out in "the holler"even though we both have exceptional credit scores.)
Getting that shop built is our next big step towards self-sufficiency by the time retirement rolls around.
